The town of Hingham was originally known as Bare Cove. It was first settled by Europeans in 1633. The town was incorporated in 1635 and was renamed Hingham. Originally, the town included Cohasset, Massachusetts, but it was separated in 1770. It was named after a village in the English County of Norfolk, East Anglia. Samuel Lincoln, the first American ancestor of Abraham Lincoln, also resided in this town between 1622 and 1690.
