Norwell, Massachusetts, in Plymouth county, is 8 miles SE of Weymouth, Massachusetts (center to center) and 19 miles SE of Boston, Massachusetts. As of the year 2000 census, 9,765 people lived in Norwell. -

The town of Norwell was settled in 1634, and established in 1849, when it became known as South Scituate. The name was changed to Norwell in 1888. It was named in honor of Henry Norwell, who funded the maintenance of the town roads. Early settlers were attracted to the land for agricultural reasons, but shipbuilding became a major industry later on. Norwell is located in Plymouth County, which was created in 1685.
